May 8 – Honduras have stepped up to host the second regional championship in the country in a year, with the CONCACAF Under-20 Women’s Championship 2015 this December. The championship will decide the three teams to qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016.

“Our country is honored to host another sporting competition, in which we will play to reach a goal, but also to broaden the values we build through football, strengthen the friendship between our nations, and foment the specialty of women’s football throughout the world,” said Alfredo Hawit (pictured), vice-president of CONCACAF and General Secretary of the Honduran National Football Federation.

Honduras hosted the CONCACAF U17 Boys Championship in March. Referring to the success of that tournament, CONCACAF president Jeffrey Webb said: “We are delighted to return to Honduras for the Women’s Under-20 Championship, the second CONCACAF tournament to be hosted in Honduras this year. The Federation’s eagerness to bring this championship to San Pedro Sula proves the growth of women’s football in the Central American region.”

The U20 championship will be competed for by eight teams, three from the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), two from the Central American Football Union (UNCAF) -Honduras qualify as hosts – and Canada, Mexico and the United States from North America who are qualified automatically.

All matches will be played in San Pedro Sula from December 3-13. The date for the draw has not been announced.

Teams will play in two groups of four with the top two teams in each group qualifying for the knock-out semi-finals.

The two finalists and the winner of the third place play off will qualify for the 2016 U20 Women’s World Cup in Papua New Guinea.
