May 8 – The Russian investment in building infrastructure and facilities for the 2018 World Cup appears to be having a positive knock-on effect for sports facilities generally in the country with 12 new sports centres expected to be opened in Moscow in 2015.

The projects range from new pitch complexes to new arenas, and the regeneration of existing facilities.

Moscow city’s Department of Construction in a press release said that under its Targeted Investment Programme, it will open six football complexes, including the stadium ‘Olympus’ in eastern Moscow.

Also included in the construction plans are two velodromes, and a specialist sports complex for martial arts training and competitions.

In 2015 the city has already completed the reconstruction of the ice arena, Vympel.

Russia will host the 2018 World Cup in 12 stadia across 11 cities. The total cost of the World Cup is now reckoned to be 637.6 billion rubles ($11.8 billion), of which 336 billion rubles ($6.2 billion) will continue to be provided by the central government.
