May 11- Chelsea received a boost in new Twitter followers in the week they confirmed themselves as Premier League champions, putting on more than 5,000 new followers than their north London rivals Arsenal. Man Utd are maintaining their run at the top of the Twitter weekly rankings – they put on another whopping 49,294 followers, over 14,000 more than Chelsea.
The Insideworldfootball Twitter stats track the English language twitter feeds of the Premier League clubs week on week.
Notable in the past week is a resurgence in Aston Villa’s performance, almost matching their remarkable uplift in form with the takeover of Time Sherwood as manager.
Villa jumped to seventh in the weekly having occupied a bottom five position in recent weeks. Overall Villa are 10th in the overall total number of Twitter followers, a position that probably underperforms their own ambition and preferred status as one of the Premier League’s ‘bigger’ clubs.
The gap between sixth place Tottenham Hotspur and fifth place Manchester City in the weekly stats is significantly large at just under 6,000 followers. But even they are a long way behind fourth placed Liverpool (over 16,000 this week), and almost 40,000 behind Manchester United this week.
That 40,000 gap is more than a third of the total number of followers Burnley have. While Burnley may have won many admirers and much respect in the Premier League with their no-nonsense, straight-talking, have-a-go season, this grit and determination has not translated into a mass twitter following.
That isn’t to say that Burnley haven’t tried hard in this area. In terms of the total number of tweets made they lie seventh in the overall table but in the week they were relegated they seem to have run out of tweet steam, coming 19th in weekly table, just ahead of Newcastle United, another club that looks to be gasping for air.
West Ham topped the tweets table with 475 tweets. A huge 136 ahead of second place Manchester City.
