June 11 – CONCACAF has postponed its U15 Boys Championship originally scheduled to be played in the Cayman Islands and Jamaica this August until further notice.
The tournament would have been the third time a U15 championship had been held, which started with Boys in 2013 and then Girls last year. The 2015 edition had 37 entered teams including teams from Brazil, England and Vanuatu from outside the confederation.
The confederation stated that “it regrets the decision but will continue to focus on its core mission of delivering outstanding soccer events. In the short term, efforts will be dedicated in full to the successful delivery of the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015, in addition to other Championships which also qualify CONCACAF teams to worldwide-level tournaments, such as the Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship and the Under-20 Women’s Championship, to be played as scheduled later in 2015.”
CONCACAF said that it intends to stage the U15 tournaments as part of “a full slate of complementary youth development tournaments in the shortest possible time.” While no timescale is given to the restoration of the U15 Boys’ Championship, CONCACAF said it hoped to do so “at the soonest opportunity”.
The decision was made by the CONCACAF Executive Committee who expressed disappointment at having to make this choice.
