June 19 – Romania’s football federation FRF has inked a contract with local telecommunications company Telekom Romania which will become the main sponsor of the country’s national team.
Telekom Romania was set up in 2014 as a result of a merger between telecommunications companies Romtelecom and Cosmote. With the latest deal, the firm is aiming to promote its brand in the local market.
“Telekom and the Romanian national team share the same values, which include fair play, honesty, and a strive for success,” said Nikolai Beckers, the chief executive of Telekom.
The deal is for a two-year period, but Razvan Burleanu, the president of the FRF, said that the federation aims to extend the contract to at least four years. The value of the latest deal was not disclosed by the parties, but is said to be worth several million euros, reports local news site Romania-Insider.com.
The development follows an earlier decision by the FRF to change its kit supplier from Adidas to Joma under a deal worth up to €5.4 million. The contract allowed the Spanish sports apparel maker to sign its second technical sponsorship deal with a European national team, following the contract it signed with Bulgaria’s football federation.
