23 June – Tickets for EURO2016 are in hot demand. So far 3.7 million tickets have been requested, organisers have said.
In May UEFA and the Local Organising Committee of EURO 2016 announced ticket prices as cheap as €25 for next year’s tournament with the aim of making the matches accessible to all fans.
A first application phase for tickets began on June 10 with one million tickets on sale. The cheapest ticket costs €25 and is available for 43 of the 51 games, notable exceptions are the opening match, the semi-finals and the final.
This ticketing policy is turning out to be a hit with football fans.
“Yesterday [Friday] we were at 3.7 million requests for one million tickets, so it’s a much bigger demand than the offer,” said Jacques Lambert, president of the Euro 2016 tournament’s organising committee. The demand for tickets has already oversubscribed the offer by almost four times.
Lambert did add that most requests had been for the cheapest tickets and that fans could increase their chances of getting tickets by applying for more expensive ones.
Fans in the host country are responsible for 55% of requests, but, overall, requests have come from 200 countries.
The first phase of the ticket sale is open until July 10 and requests can only be made on the euro2016.fr website. In total, 1.8 million out of 2.5 million tickets will go to the general public for the 51 matches in the newly expanded 24-team tournament.
