June 26 – The on-off ownership of Bulgaria’s Levski Sofia has been resolved with Todor Batkov announcing that he is stepping down after 17 years at the helm. At an emotional press conference the lawyer said that he will transfer his shares to the Chairman of the Board of the club, Ivo Tonev, and two other businessmen, Alexander Angelov and Nikolai Ivanov.
Batkov broke down in tears as he announced his decision, saying that he has invested nearly BGN45 million (€22.5 milion) in the club, but will transfer his shares free of charge.
“For 17 years, I meet with you and I have always been someone in Levski. Today is the last time when I will speak to you as a majority shareholder, Chairman of the Supervisory Board or a president,” said Batkov.
“I was thinking for a long time, talked to different people and eventually I was impressed by the idea and program platforms to ensure a normal budget of Levski and I’m pleased to report that I decided to transfer my holdings, 98.2%, in equal proportions to three people – Ivo Tonev, Alexander Angelov and Nikolay Ivanov.”
The poor performances of Levski in recent years, combined with its deepening financial problems damaged relations between Batkov and the club’s supporters. Last year the fans established a Supporters trust, with the aim of removing Batkov from the club.
As a sign of goodwill Batkov said he would transfer 15% of his share to the trust without charge. However. Batkov did not fulfill his promise.
“I want to thank the thousands who supported me for so many years, I remain one of them. Now I will watch Levski as a man with liberated psyche,” said Batkov.
