Fox feeds on World Cup success, closing TV deal with NWSL in US

July 2 – Whilst the Women’s World Cup in Canada is attracting record numbers of spectators, Fox Sports are capitalising on the growing market for women’s soccer in North America by securing a broadcasting deal with the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

Fox will televise three regular season games, both semi-final playoff games, and the final NWSL Championship Game on October 1. Additionally, four other regular season games will be available online and on tablets and mobile devices through the FOX Sports GO app.

Of the nine teams in the professional US league, Portland Thorns FC, featuring World Cup stars Alex Morgan of the US, Jodie Taylor of England. and Christine Sinclair of Canada, will get the most exposure. Two of their regular season games will be aired on FOX Sports 1 and another two will be available through the online, tablet and mobile platforms.

The league is widely regarded as the pinnacle of women’s club football. This reputation is validated by the presence of NWSL players at the World Cup where there have been 160 total appearances at the tournament from players in the NWSL.
