July 2 – Gheorghe Chivorchian (pictured), the general secretary of the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) has suspended himself from his position after prosecutors charged him with abusing his position and forging documents when he was chairman of club side Poli Timisoara.

Chivorchian was charged on Saturday in connection with €1 million paid to Poli Timisoara from local authorities in 2008 when he was the club chairman.

On Tuesday Chivorchian, who has been general secretary since 2014, said he considered it “necessary and natural to interrupt the performance of my duties as Secretary General” until the procedures initiated by the state institutions involving him had led to a “full clarification of the situation.”

According to Chivorchian, the Romanian Football Federation has “assumed a new way, guided by professionalism and transparency” so he would be presenting his request to be suspended to the FRF Executive Board on July 6.

Whilst Chivorchian pleads innocence, prosecutors have alleged that Chivorchian abused his position and forged documents saying the funds were for players’ salaries, when they were used for other purposes, including paying off debts.

Whilst the situation is “being clarified,” FRF president, Razvan Burleanu, who commended Chivorchian’s decision, is expected to take over his duties.
