July 10 – An anti-discrimination group is planning to protest wage inequality at today’s victory parade by the United States’ World Cup-winning women’s team in New York.
Organised by UltraViolet, the demonstration will feature a plane carrying a banner above the parade calling for equal pay for women footballers.
UltraViolet, which had been campaigning since February, will highlight the fact that the women’s world champions netted only $2 million compared with the £35 million that went to the 2014 men’s World Cup winners Germany and the fact that the US men’s team received $8 million despite going out in the first round in Brazil.
“Our message to FIFA is simple: equal pay for equal play,” said co-founder Nita Chaudhary. “FIFA’s antiquated pay discrimination isn’t acceptable anymore.”
The overhead banner will read “@UltraViolet: FIFA—Equal Pay 4 Equal Play” while the group is also dispatching a fleet of bikes equipped with billboards.
