July 14 – What’s in a name? Quite a lot when it comes to fans and their beloved football club.
Supporters of England’s Hull City, who have just been relegated from the Premier League, at least have something to cheer about. Attempts to change the club’s name to Hull Tigers appear to have been buried for good.
Hull owner Assem Allam has repeatedly failed in his attempt to rebrand the club to attract overseas investment and now the English Football Association’s council has rejected the controversial name change application for a second time.
Egyptian-born Allam took over the club in 2010 and saved them from administration. He wanted to change the name to Hull Tigers in order to improve global marketing potential. While the latest vote will delight Hull supporters, there is a danger that Allam will now sell, something he has threatened to do if the name change failed to go ahead.
