July 27 – Two years after the side secured a promotion to Romania’s top tier Liga I, FC Botosani unveiled the design of its new stadium which is estimated to cost about €18 million. Under the plan, the stadium will be fitted with a seating capacity of at least 11,000.
The project was unveiled at a meeting by the club’s owner, local businessman Valeriu Iftime, and the mayor of Botosani Ovidiu Portariuc.
“The stadium will become a major attraction in the city,” said Portariuc. “We will wait and see if there is available funding from the National Investment Company, but it will be difficult to obtain it after we already acquired funding for a municipal hospital and five gym halls. We will take all the necessary steps and go wherever we need to go to obtain funding [for the new stadium].”
Due to issues qualifying for licenses experienced by rival Romanian sides, FC Botosani, which finished eight in the 18-team league, went through to this year’s Europa League qualifiers. The side was eliminated in the second qualifying round by Poland’s Legia Warsaw.
