August 3 – Paraguay has offered to be one of the five official nominees for UEFA boss Michel Platini’s bid for the FIFA presidency, the country’s federation said in a letter sent to FIFA.

Candidates for the February 26 election to replace Sepp Blatter have to present written support of five associations by October 26, four months before.

“The Paraguayan Football Association (APF) is honoured to officially offer its backing to Michel Platini’s candidacy for the president of FIFA,” said the association in a letter addressed to FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke.

“Please send Michel Platini’s candidacy to the FIFA electoral committee to be examined,” the letter, signed by APF president Alejandro Dominguez (pictured) and published on its website, added.

Last week Conmebol announced sweeping reform changes and with the South America confederation’s headquarters based in Paraguay, the latest move would suggest the region as a whole could get behind Platini though no official declaration to that effect has been made.

Platini has already emerged as the early front-runner though South Korea’s Chung Mong-joon says he intends to stand too and South African human rights icon and former political prisoner Tokyo Sexwale, who sits on a number of FIFA committees, is also reportedly being encouraged to bid.
