August 12 – Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho’s reputation for courting controversy and being prone to over-reaction as well as winning trophies is already making headlines with only one match of the new Premier League season completed.
After Saturday’s opening 2-2 draw against Swansea, Mourinho took a swipe at his own medical staff, led by female team doctor Eva Carneiro, describing them as “impulsive and naive” for treating Belgian midfield star Eden Hazard in stoppage time with Chelsea already down to 10 men following the sending-off of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
“Whether you are a kit man, doctor or secretary on the bench you have to understand the game,” Mourinho, renowned for his attention to detail, said after the game.
According to unconfirmed reports, drastic action has already been taken. Whilst remaining first-team doctor on a day to day basis, Carneiro is apparently set to lose her place on the bench during matches, starting with Sunday’s trip to Manchester City, one of the biggest fixtures of the season.
Carneiro turned to social media in response to Mourinho’s rant. “I would like to thank the general public for their overwhelming support. Really very much appreciated,” she is reported to have written.
