August 12 – ICSS (the International Centre for Sport Security) has announced that Richard Haass (pictured), president of US think tank, Council on Foreign Relations, will give the opening address at Securing Sport 2015, to be held in New York, November 3-4. Condoleezza Rice, 66th U.S. Secretary of State, will also be speaking at the conference.
Now in its fifth year, Securing Sport has become the leading talk shop focused on international sport security and integrity, and is making its debut in the US.
Conference topics include corruption and financial integrity in sport, cyber attacks and major event security threats, the US sport betting debate (a huge issue in the US) and sport governance.
The event’s objective is to examine the biggest threats to the safety, security and integrity of sport and unite high-profile decision-makers, law enforcement officials and senior policy-makers. While the US appear to be taking a lead in this area with the recent Department of Justice’s raid on football globally, the conference is intended to address global issues in a more ’rounded’ context.
Haass said: “As we have seen over recent months, many questions have been raised about the governance of world sport and the responsibility that sports organisations have to civil society.
“This is a defining era for many industries, including sport, and it is essential that all stakeholders, including sport governing bodies, governments, sponsors, as well as policy makers recognise that more consistent and coordinated international effort is required in the field of sport safety, security and integrity.
“Securing Sport 2015 will provide an important platform for high-level leaders from around the world to discuss the future of sport and I look forward to opening this landmark conference as well as sharing my views about the industry in New York later this year.”
