August 21 – Catania have been relegated to the third tier of Italian football for their involvement in a match-fixing scandal last season. The Sicilian side were also deducted 12 points for this season and fined €150,000 while club president Antonino Pulvirenti has been banned for five years and fined €300,000.
Catania finished 15th in Serie B last season, two points above the relegation zone, after a run of five wins in a row in March and April. The Italian FA said the matches under investigation were the wins against Avellino, Varese, Trapani, Latina and Ternana and the draw against Livorno.
In late June, Pulvirenti was arrested along with six others in connection with the affair including then sporting director Pablo Cosentino and ex-sporting director Daniele Delli Carri while some 3,000 supporters held street demonstrations.
Catania were relegated from Serie A in 2013-14 after eight seasons in the top flight and say they will appeal against the latest demotion.
