August 24 – Twelve years after the tragic death of Marc-Vivien Foe at the 2003 Confederations Cup, another Cameroon footballer has lost his life after collapsing.
Leopold Angong Oben, a 26-year-old striker with Cameroonian second division side Dynamo de Douala, received treatment after being fouled in the penalty area against Colombe du Dja-et-Lobo at the weekend but collapsed minutes later and did not recover.
Cause of death has not yet been disclosed but Oben was the second player from Dynamo de Douala to die in the space of three weeks after 27-year-old goalkeeper Ferdinand Mbog lost his life following an unspecified illness.
Foe’s heart-related death shocked world football and led to huge improvements in both the testing of footballers for heart problems and the treatment they receive during matches even though isolated fatalities still occur.
