FIFA leave Indonesia out in the cold until government backs down

August 26 – FIFA have denied claims by Indonesia that officials are planning a visit in October with a view to overturning the ban on the country for government interference.

Indonesia has been excluded from both the 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup qualifying campaign as a result of being barred from world football in June after the government refused to back down in their demands that the local soccer association (PSSI) block two clubs from taking part in the top flight domestic league.

Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi says FIFA are sending an investigative delegation to approve the running of the game. But a FIFA spokesman told Reuters: “FIFA and AFC (Asian Football Confederation) would like to confirm that no such visit is planned.”

“Nor will a FIFA/AFC mission take place until the respective governmental authorities have duly respected the principle of autonomy of sports organisations.”
