September 3 – Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are to set up a camp for refugees coming into Germany and will donate €1 million towards refugee projects in the country.
Working alongside the city of Munich, the largest football club in Germany will provide meals, German lessons and football equipment to young children who have migrated to Germany.
It is expected that Germany will take in more than 800,000 asylum seekers this year – four times higher than last years total. This is largely due to the ongoing conflict in Syria.
Bayern have also announced that before the next home match versus Augsburg each of their players will enter the field of play holding the hand of one German child and one refugee child in order to set an example of integration.
Karl Heinz Rummenigge, the Bayern president, said: “Bayern sees it as its social responsibility to help the refugees.”
Bayern’s work has been praised by Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann: “This is a great and exemplary action that I very much welcome and support. It’s another great sign of the helpfulness and welcoming culture in our country.”
This act of generosity follows rivals Borussia Dortmund who invited 220 refugees to watch them play Norwegian side Odd in the Europa league last week. Other teams in the Bundesliga have also given away tickets for the same cause.
