September 3 – The municipal authorities of Paks, a city in Hungary’s south-west, have added HUF 600 million (€1.9 million) to the HUF 800 million (€2.6 million) earmarked by the Hungarian government to finance the upgrade and expansion the Paksi FC stadium.

The cash commitment was unveiled by Mayor of Paks Janos Suli, reports local news weekly Budapest Business Journal. The investment will allow Paksi FC to modernise the sports facility and increase the stadium’s seating capacity from the current 1,150 to between 3,000 and 3,500 seats.

The sports facility in Paks was opened in 1959, and last went through an upgrade in 2008.

Hungarian football clubs across the country are benefiting from state funds to overhaul their facilities as part of a HUF40 billion (€128 million) government programme – 27 football stadiums will be modernised and expanded by 2016.

Paksi FC currently plays in the OTP Bank Liga (Nemzeti Bajnokság I), the top tier of Hungary’s professional football league. In the 2014/2015 season, the club came fifth in the 16 team league.
