September 15 – Barcelona have announced a total restructuring of its business model with a new department to be headed by Francesco Calvo (pictured), appointed as the club’s new commercial director and joining from Juventus where he was sales manager.
The move was orchestrated by Barca boss Josep Maria Bartomeu who wants to re-organise commercial priorities to “optimise efforts and strategies.”
Calvo will take on one of the biggest roles at the club, working to promote Barcelona’s sales units; the Asian and American offices in Hong Kong and New York; the exploitation of the stadium and facilities, marketing and strategy; audiovisual media and e-commerce; licences and merchandising; and the football and basketball schools and camps.
At Juve, Calvo “gathered in-depth knowledge of the football business, the generation of income and sponsorship deals”, a Barca statement said. He starts on October 1 when Austria’s Arno Trabesinger will take over Barcelona’s US offices in New York.
Meantime, the Barcelona board has approved the launch of a charity project to assist the ongoing refugee crisis, details of which will be announced in the coming days.
