September 16 – Manchester City, who opened their Champions League campaign last night with a 1-2 home loss to last year’s beaten finalists Juventus, are top of one table with an almost unassailable lead but it will be little consolation. The club tops the rankings of club spending both in the transfer window just closed, and in spending since 2010.

The record €3 billion spent in the summer transfer window has prompted the CIES Football Observatory to dive deeper into a look at the spending trends across Europe.
Seven Premier League clubs are in the top 20 spending clubs both in the transfer window just closed, and in spending since 2010. English clubs occupy four of the top 10 places with Manchester’s teams (who both lost last night) holding the top slots for 2015 and Man City (€784 million), Chelsea (€711 million) and Man Utd (€640 million) in the top three positions of the spending from 2010 table.
The first non-English club in the spending since 2010 table is France’s Paris St Germain with €611 million.
The transfer expenditure of English clubs (€1.35 billion, a new record high) accounted for 41% of the total of big-5 league spending.
Four Spanish, four German, four Italian and two French clubs make up the remaining 20 places.
The Summer 2015 spend was a 32% increase compared to the previous record high in summer 2014.
On average, during the last three summer transfer windows (2013-2015), the transfer expenditure of big-5 league clubs was 68% greater than in the three previous ones (2010-2012). The biggest increase of 98% was recorded by the Premier League level.
