September 17 – The general secretary of the seven-strong South Asian Football Federation (SAFF), says his members will all tow the party line and vote for Michel Platini in next February’s FIFA presidential election.

Asian Football Confederation chief Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa has already named Platini as his preferred candidate and Anwarul Huq of Bangladesh says SAFF, comprising India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Maldives, will follow suit.

Both Jordan’s Prince Ali bin al-Hussein and South Korea’s Chung Mong-joon, who have each criticised Platini’s approach to the election, hope to split the Asian vote. Chung has accused the AFC of sending unsolicited letters to its members urging them to support Platini.

But Huq said: “The AFC chief has already backed Platini. We will go with the AFC. At the end of the day, voting is an individual thing but we will go with AFC as we always do.”
