September 21 – The global auditing firm KPMG has launched an internal review of its Swiss subsidiary that is responsible for the audit of FIFA according to the Swiss media.
A KPMG Switzerland spokesman confirmed to the SonntagsZeitung newspaper that services the Swiss unit performed for FIFA were being examined. Last week FIFA suspended Jerome Valcke, its secretary general and No2 to president Sepp Blatter, over allegations relating to an alleged World Cup tickets deal. Valcke has denied the claims.
In May, the US Department of Justice indicted 14 football and marketing officials in a $150 million money-laundering and racketeering conspiracy that rocked world football’s governing body. The Swiss Attorney General’s Office, meanwhile, is investigating allegations of wrongdoing over the awards of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup to Russia and Qatar.
Since 1999, KPMG Switzerland has been responsible for auditing FIFA’s financial reports. Should it discover irregularities during such a review, an auditor is bound by law to report them.
