October 16 – Following Serbia’s unsuccessful campagin to qualify for the Euro 2016 finals in France, the country’s Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic has announced that his government will allocate €150 million to the construction of a new national football stadium in Belgrade.
Under the plan, the new stadium would have capacity of between 50,000 and 60,000 spectators.
In total, the build is estimated to cost as much as €250 million, according to Tomislav Karadzic, president of the Serbian Football Federation (FSS).
Karadzic said that an additional €15 million for the project could be obtained from FIFA and UEFA. This would mean that the Serbian federation still needs to find the remaining €85 million to complete the stadium project.
The prime minister said that the planned stadium will most likely by taken over by one of the two major clubs which are based in the Serbian capital, Red Star or Partizan Belgrade, but it has not been decided which one.
“I don’t know whether the stadium will be taken over by Red Star or Partizan, but this will create a conflict,” Vucic said.
