October 21 – Nine out of ten Premier League clubs reported over 90% capacity at their stadia for the ninth round of the Premier League. Average capacity was 95.71%, with only Newcastle United dropping below 90% at 89.7%.
Chelsea and Spurs topped the table with a combined capacity of 78,082 and just 560 seats unfilled. Spurs are part-way through a ground extension programme, while Chelsea have unveiled outline plans for a complete rebuild of Stamford Bridge. On attendance figures so far this season neither club would have trouble filling any extra capacity.
Manchester City, who recently extended the capacity of the Etihad Stadium, are similarly filling their ground, reporting just 595 unfilled seats.
Watford, who have proportionally lagged behind their Premier league rivals in terms of filling their stadia, had their strongest week to date, filling 96.37% of their capacity.
Newcastle United, with the league’s fifth biggest stadium at 52,405, have struggled all season to fill their stadium but the 6-2 win over Norwich might bring fresh hope to a passionate city that more often than not defines itself by its football team.
The Insideworldfootball stats are taken from the club’s reported attendance figure. They do not take account of tickets that might have been sold but the ticket holder did not turn up. Also, for some games stadiums will have slightly reduced capacities due to media and safety requirements.
