October 23 – Russia’s Ministry of Sports has agreed on the cost of construction for the Kalinigrad stadium, one of the last to start building. Stadium Kaliningrad is to be built on October Island in Kalingrad but construction pricing had been stalled over the amount of groundwork required for the stadium. Initial work required the strengthening of the coastline and establishment of a foundation and communications infrastructure.

Rolbinov told Russian news agency TASS that the first phase of construction was underway. “On-site installation of the boundary perimeter has been finished in accordance with all safety requirements,” he said. “Next week power will be delivered to the site. Now the contractor is gaining momentum, and after the conclusion of the contract to start the active phase of construction.”

The stadium will have a capacity of 35,000 for the World Cup which will later be reduced to 25,000. The total area under construction on the island is 140 hectares and stadium construction is expected to be completed in December 2017.

Expenses cut
Expenses to prepare for the 2018 World Cup have been cut by Ruble 4.5 billion ($71 million), according to a Russian government decision. This will reduce the overall costs of implementing the World Cup programme will be reduced from Ruble 631.4 billion ($10 billion) to Ruble 626.9 billion.
