October 29 – Slovakia’s government is aiming to complete the construction of a new national football stadium in 2017, according to the country’s Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport Juraj Draxler.
“We’ve already identified the way in which the state will take over the key part of the national football stadium project so that we’d be able to see the stadium standing by the end of 2017,” Draxler said.
The sports facility will be located in the country’s capital Bratislava, and it is estimated that its construction will cost some €68 million. This would represent a major increase on the initial estimate of €45 million but, according to the Slovak minister, the first estimate related only to the construction work, and not other related costs.
A tender for construction works at the new stadium is currently underway, after it was launched last August by the project’s managing group, National Football Stadium.
The Bratislava plan has been praised by Jan Kovacik (pictured), the president of the Slovak Football Association (SFZ). He said that currently Slovakia is part of a small group of countries comprising Moldova, Belarus, Albania, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Slovenia which do not have a national football stadium in their respective capitals.
