October 30 – Lawyers acting on behalf of Eva Carneiro, the Chelsea team doctor who was verbally lambasted by manager Jose Mourinho and had her position downgraded, have served notice of a claim of constructive dismissal against the club after she failed to agree a severance package.
Mourinho’s treatment of Carneiro, including a ban from the bench after he described her and Jon Fearn, the Chelsea physiotherapist, of being “impulsive and naive” for treating Belgian star Eden Hazard when Chelsea were chasing the game on the opening game of the season, has been widely criticised across the sport’s medical profession. She has since left the club.
Reports say the legal papers will trigger an employment tribunal unless the club can agree an out-of-court settlement with Carneiro before any hearing.
Mourinho has been cleared of using discriminatory language but the defending champions have had their worst ever start to a Premier League campaign with their Portuguese coach reportedly in grave danger of being replaced if results don’t pick up, starting with Saturday’s match against Liverpool.
