November 5 – Hungary’s MTK has signed a deal with a construction to build the club’s new stadium under a HUF 6.3 billion (€20 million) project. The Nándor Hidegkuti stadium is to be completed by the end of August 2016, two months later than initially planned.
Funds for the build will be provided via a Hungarian government project to spend as much as HUF 40 billion (€129 million) on modernising and expanding a total of 27 football stadiums by the end of 2016.
The stadium will be enabled to accommodate up to 5,500 spectators. Last season, MTK reported an average attendance of only about 1,500 spectators per match, however, with the new investment, the Budapest-based side is aiming to attract more supporters to its matches, according to Tamas Deutsch, the president of MTK.
“Yes, we have a goal to, in the near future, use 80% of 90% of our available capacity [at the new stadium],” Deutsch said.
This would be a tripling of its current average match day attendance once the new stadium is opened.
MTK currently competes in the Nemzeti Bajnoksag I, Hungary’s top tier.
