Gerrard heads for Aussie for Liverpool Legends debut in Sydney

November 24 – Liverpool’s pre-season tour took in two matches in Australia this summer. Now it is the turn of the official Liverpool FC legends to head down under for a fixture against the Australian Legends at the Sydney ANZ on January 7 next year.

Liverpool have not released their full squad but they have announced that Steven Gerrard will be making his Legends debut alongside Jamie Carragher, Ian Rush, Didi Hamamm and John Arne Riise will also be in a Liverpool team managed by Gerard Houllier.

The match marks the debut of the Australian Legends side which will include Brett Emerton, Tony Popovic and Mark Bosnich.

Gerard Houllier said: “It will be a very proud moment to step back into the dugout to manage the Liverpool Legends team. I’m very much looking forward to working with some of the best players in the Club’s history, some for the first time and some not.

“But getting back out in front of the LFC fans will be the most special – wherever you are in the world their support is incredible and will make this game a really special experience.”

Legends football has not been overly kind to Liverpool who lost their last fixture to bitter rivals Manchester United Legends in Stockholm in September despite have led with a Vladimir Smicer goal. Man Utd then scored four times through Karel Poborsky, Dwight Yorke, Bojan Djordjic and Jesper Blomqvist, before David Thompson got one back.

As usual Liverpool will be relying on Gerrard genius to reverse their fortunes. Gerrard signed for LA Galaxy in the summer but so far has made more headlines in the UK fulfilling broadcast commitments than scoring goals in the MLS.
