January 8 – The last two weeks have seen a huge amount of tweeting by Premier League clubs who, combined, averaged just over 7,000 tweets a week compared to an average of about 4,500 tweets a week, in the four weeks leading up to Christmas.
West Ham have been the busiest with 1223 tweets – because a response to a fruitful set of results. Arsenal, who ended the period top of the Premier League, were in 2nd place with 1062 tweets, a performance that is no doubt helping them to keep ahead of Manchester United in terms of total twitter followers.
In comparison Man Utd tweeted only 753 times but nevertheless are still gaining on Arsenal in terms of total followers.
Arsenal head the overall table with 6.806 million followers whilst Man Utd now have 6.743 followers, meaning the gap has now closed to less than 1% (0.93% to be exact).
At the current rate Man Utd could well take over Arsenal next week to head the league table of twitter followers.
The demise of Chelsea in the league has also seen a loss of Twitter form with Liverpool now consistently beating them in the weekly followers chart. Previously Chelsea and Arsenal had traded blows for second spot on a weekly basis.
Lower down the table, high flying Leicester City have taken advantage of league form and rank seventh in the Twitter table over the holiday period but only 18th in the overall table.
Proof that is easier to top the Premier League table proper than it is to top the Premier League Twitter table.
