February 15 – Thirteen more European federations have pledged unanimous support to Gianni Infantino in his bid to become FIFA president, according to the Serbian FA (FSS).
The FSS hosted a convention in Belgrade on Saturday attended by Infantino and the FA chiefs of Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, Russia, Romania and Turkey.
“Unified and unanimous support has been conveyed to Gianni Infantino in his candidacy to become FIFA president,” the FSS said.
“There is a conviction that he is the best candidate to lead the world soccer governing body.”
The inclusion of Russia is particularly interesting given that it is widely anticipated that Russian FA boss Vitaly Mutko may break ranks and vote instead for Sheikh Salman.
He may not be the only one. Russia’s traditional eastern European allies may follow them while Malta is almost certain to back Prince Ali bin al-Hussein in the first round.
Infantino says he has widespread support as well in South and Central America while earlier this month, he hinted he could appoint an African to run day-to-day administration as general secretary if he wins the election on February 26.
