February 19 – Manchester United overtook Arsenal today to become the English Premier League club with the most Twitter followers. Having overtaken them, they soared to a lead of more than 500 followers within hours.
Man Utd now have 7,053,500 followers as opposed to Arsenal’s 7,053,000.
Chelsea maintained third position but are almost 500,000 followers behind the new leaders.
So what is the relationship between new tweets and new followers? The value of the correlation is: 0.5002. This is a moderately positive correlation.
What is the relationship between performance? Arsenal are currently third in the league with 51 points and Man Utd are currently fifth with 41 points and lost last night in the Europe League, so it’s definitely not related to winning performances.
The reality is that Man Utd are a very well run international business who have built what has become a self-sustaining brand growth off the back of long term success and particularly the years over which Alex Ferguson was manager. This has created generations of support at a time when the world has never been more connected.
They club also has a high quality of tweets.
