April 8 – Eugenio Figueredo, the former FIFA vice-president not only indicted in the United States as part of the FifaGate scandal but who has also become embroiled in the Panama Papers debacle, has undergone emergency prostate surgery at home in Uruguay.
The 84-year-old one-time CONMEBOL boss, one of the original Zurich Seven arrested last May in Switzerland just before the FIFA Congress, was extradited to his homeland instead of the USA to face trial in a separate corruption case brought by the Uruguayan judicial authorities.
But this week he was back in the news after it emerged that he had at least seven offshore companies and had done business with the law firm of Juan Pedro Damiani, a member of FIFA’s ethics committee. Under pressure of conflict of interest, Damiani has now resigned from the body even though he claims he has done nothing wrong.
Figueredo, who also for a time head his national association, was reportedly taken from jail to a private hospital for immediate surgery granted by the judge overseeing his trial.
