April 26 – The Brazilian FA, the CBF, have kicked off a week of seminars discussing the future of Brazilian football. Brazil coach Carlos Dunga (pictured) and Italy coach Antonio Conte opened the proceedings.
The CBF have promoted the week of debate under the catchline ‘Somos Futebol – Semana de Evolução do Futebol Brasileiro’ (We are football – week of the evolution of Brazilian football). The meeting gathers a number of high-profile Brazilian coaches and football administrators and international guests to assess the state of the Brazilian game.
Brazil coach Dunga opened proceedings, talking about the technical and tactical evolutions of the game. Speaking about the current Brazil team and criticism of the progress in terms of results, he said: “I don’t want to be proven right, I want to win…We have the same record now to the one we had after six matches in the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.”
“People are talking about pressure, but there isn’t any. A coach needs time to work,” he continued.
Franco Baldini, former England assistant and director of football at Real Madrid, and Diego Aguirre, the Uruguayan coach of Atletico Mineiro, are among other foreign speakers. Their invitations are a recognition by the CBF that Brazilian football needs to interact with foreign coaches and experts, and be exposed to international influences.
Brazilian football is going through a transitional phase after a disappointing World Cup on home soil in 2014. Dunga was appointed as Brazil’s coach, but has so far failed to deliver: Brazil performed poorly at the 2015 Copa America. In the South American World Cup qualifiers Brazil are sixth, outside the slots to ensure qualification for the 2018 Russia World Cup.
The recent draws with both Uruguay and Paraguay have led for calls to dismiss Dunga and replace him with Corinthians coach Tite. Dunga and technical director Gilmar Rinaldi were left in no doubt by CBF bosses that results need to improve drastically.
This summer Brazil participate in the centenary Copa America in the USA before trying to win a coveted gold medal at the Rio Olympic Games.
