May 6 – The opening match of EURO 2016 is struggling to sell out. On April 26 UEFA released a final batch of tickets for its flagship event but the showpiece opener at Paris’ Stade de France still has seats available.
Tickets became available from a variety of sources as stadium lay-outs were finalized and a number of participating nations, who hadn’t sold all their ticket allocations, returned them for resale.
Fans were served on UEFA’s ticketing platform on a first come, first serve basis, but tickets for the high-profile opening match between hosts France and Romania at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis have not sold out. Tickets are still available in both category 1 and 2, costing €595 and €395 respectively.
Tickets for a number of other less popular matches also remain, including both Iceland’s matches against Hungary and Portugal. For the encounter between Romania and Albania in Lyon thousands of tickets remain unsold.
In general ticket sales for the European Championship have been highly successful and UEFA expects one giant party at the big ‘Le Rendez-vous’ this summer, notwithstanding mounting security concerns.
For the first time, 24 countries will participate in the finals. Spain are the defending champions. The tournament culminates on July 10 with the final in Saint-Denis.
