June 23 – Fans booking hotel rooms for Round of 16 matches at Euro 2016 in France this weekend can expect a massive price hike with German and Solvakian fans being the hardest hit with a 395% bump in prices against average prices in Lille.
In comparison, German fans will pay 64% (average price £223) more than English fans for their Round of 16 game in Nice on Monday against Iceland.
The fans with the best deal look to be the Welsh and Northern Irish who meet in Paris where prices are up 31%, though Paris hotels are more expensive generally than in the rest of France.
Online trading firm IG Group has conducted the research based on Accor Hotels properties which it says will be one of the main beneficiaries of the matches.
According to IG Goup: “AccorHotels, has a portfolio of 1,598 hotels throughout France and a wide range of hotels in close proximity to each of the host venues for Euro 2016, incorporates brands including Sofitel, Novotel, Mercure, Ibis and F1.”
The suggestion is perhaps that rather than punting on the outcome of the match with a bookmaker, an investment in Accor shares might be a bit safer.
The table below shows the average prices of hotel rooms across France in venues for the Round of 16 matches.
