Man Utd storm Premier League Twitter table as all clubs show huge gains

August 17 – What a difference a year makes in the Premier League Twitter world. Both Arsenal and Chelsea had more followers than Manchester United at start of last year but now the Manchester giants have taken a substantial lead.

Man Utd have 700,000 more followers than Arsenal and more than 1.2 million more followers than Chelsea.

Man Utd added more than 2.5 million followers over the year, reaching a total of nearly 8.5 million- an increase of 43%.

Not surprisingly, Leicester City more than tripled their followers easily winning the prize for the largest percentage increase – 317%.

The 4th, 5th and 6th places in the Premier League Twitter rankings stayed the same with Liverpool, Man City and Spurs occupying those slots.

In contrast smallers clubs like Bournemouth and Watford have over 160% increase in followers but in real terms this amounted to a paltry increase of less than 150,000 followers for each team.

Overall Premier League clubs put on a combined total of more than 11 million new followers.

Premier League new boys this season Burnley and Middlesbrough both start their campaigns with fewer Twitter followers than Bournemouth. Hull City join the Premier League elite have more followers at 265,000 compared to Bournemouth’s 195,000.

Looking at the number of tweets over the year, Premier League clubs tweeted more than 300,000 times with West Ham the most active with more than 19,000. Man City also worked hard with more than 18,000.

Man Utd only tweeted 11,000 times. There is a correlation to the number and quality of tweets to the number of new followers. Except in the case of Man Utd where the global power of the brand beats everything else.
