October 3 – This year’s Italian Supercup between Juventus and AC Milan will be played in Doha, Qatar. The announcement was made at the Aspire4sport Global Summit on Football Performance & Science in Amsterdam today.
It’s the second time that the Italian Supercup will be played in the Qatari capital. In 2014, Juventus and Napoli played at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium with an attendance of 14,000 fans. Both Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo Higuain scored a brace, with the game decided on penalties. Napoli prevailed 6-5.
This year Juventus, as champions, will meet cup runners-up AC Milan (Juve won the cup as well). The match will take place at the 2014 venue. In the previous six years, China has hosted the competition six times.
“The game is currently broadcast in more than 200 territories, and the Middle East is one of the most important for us,” said the director general of the Serie A Marco Brunelli.
Brunelli appeared at the event alongside Mansoor Al Ansari, the QFA General Secretary, who described Qatar’s anticipation at hosting the game again.
“This is the second time that the game will be held in Qatar,” said Al Ansari. “It was one of the most amazing experiences two years ago, the fans really enjoyed it because it is such a competitive fixture and we are looking forward to same opportunity this year. Hosting the game provides a good opportunity to promote the sport we love in the region and we look forward to further developing our relationship with Italian football.”
