October 20 – Arsenal topped Manchester United in the weekly Twitter followers table for the second week running. The Gunners’ 52,900 new followers is a marked jump for the club, in comparison to the tail off in growth Man Utd are experiencing.
Man Utd’s slow down may be due to the Mourinho effect (and his generally miserable demeanour) coupled with a team that are proving to be similarly exciting on the pitch. New followers are not buying into the old negativity in such large numbers.
The drop to third-placed Liverpool who grew by 30,600 new followers is significant in that it shows just how well Arsenal are doing. Chelsea are the biggest losers. After a year of level pegging with Arsenal the West Londoners started to lose ground at the bitter and distasteful end of Mourinho’s reign.
Chelsea have failed to find the spark again and grew by just 16,500 followers last week. Man City are now regularly taking the fourth spot in the weekly table.
Lower down the table, West Ham are heading towards the one million mark and will be 7th club in Premier League to break this barrier.
Overall there was a 220,815 increase in followers across the Premier League – one of the lowest weekly totals.
In contrast it was a busy week for tweets with a league total of 4,070. Crystal Palace headed the tweets table with 350 tweets and West Ham close behind with 339. Southampton, with 310, also a busy week.
These teams were suitably rewarded with increases in followers: West Ham with 5,900, Southampton with 3,500 and Crystal Palace with 2,900.
