October 24 – Vietnam’s U-19 men created history in a dramatic AFC quarter final 1-0 win over Bahrain to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup to be held in South Korea next weekend.
A crowd of more than 10,000 attended the Bahrain National Stadium to watch a tense encounter with the hosts similarly bidding to make history and in-roads into the playing power balance in the AFC region.
But it was Tran Thanh’s 72nd minute chip that broke the deadlock and the hearts of the home crowd.
Vietnam will now face the winners of either Japan or Tajikstan in the semi-finals in October 27.
In the other quarter final played Sunday, Saudi Arabia secured their place at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Korea with a 6-5 win in a sudden death penalty shootout over Iraq at Khalifa Sports City Stadium. After 120 minutes of regular and extra time the scores were ted at 2-2.
Saudi Arabia will now face either Uzbekistan or Iran in the semi-final.
