October 25 – A comparison of Twitter Followers, Facebook Likes and Instagram Followers across the Premier League shows that Manchester United dominates on all three social media platforms.
On Twitter, Man Utd are nearly 1 million clear of 2nd place Arsenal. On Facebook Man Utd have over 24 million more likes than second place Chelsea and on Instagram, Man Utd have more than 6 million more followers than second place Arsenal.
Overall across the Premier League, there are similar total amount of twitter followers (nearly 44 million) as instagram followers (41.5 million) but these numbers are exceeded by Facebook likes which total a massive 235.5 million.
Whist the big clubs dominate throughout, the spread is quite different across the social media platforms.
On Twitter the top three teams have more than 40 times more followers than the bottom 3 teams, whilst on Facebook it is more than 150 fold and on Instagram the factor is more than 180.
In the battle of social media rankings, Arsenal and Chelsea fight it out for 2nd place with Arsenal more dominant in Twitter and Instagram whilst Chelsea are more dominant in Facebook
The battle for 4th and 5th places is between Liverpool and Man City, with Liverpool beating Man City in Twitter and Facebook whilst Man City lead in Instagram.
What is very clear is that with numbers in the millions across all platforms for the top clubs then there is a huge fan base out there that social media continues to grow and communicate to across all platforms. While for many clubs the challenge is still to grow their base, for the bigger clubs it is how they monetise this interaction that is the next social media challenge.
