November 8 – A tiny Scottish lower-league side are celebrating matching the world record of 27 straight wins – with the help of Dutch giants Ajax who still hold the official record of one game fewer.
An Ajax-branded van filled with 27 crates of Dutch beer drove on to the pitch at full-time last weekend to congratulate the players of Scottish Lowland League leaders East Kilbride together with a video message from former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who is now a marketing director for the Dutch club.
Ajax’s 1971-72 run, when the team included the likes of legends Johan Cruyff, Jonny Rep and Johan Neeskens, remains the official world record since East Kilbride are part-timers.
From the town of the same name just outside Glasgow, they were founded in 1871 but eventually went out of business before being reborn six years ago.
East Kilbride matched the unofficial record of 27 victories set by English non-leaguers Hereford whose run came to an end in January. The Bulls – formerly Hereford United – were wound up in December 2014 but have also been revived and sit in the ninth tier of English football while East Kilbride play in the fifth level of senior football in Scotland.
