November 8 – Qatar is putting sustainability at the top of its stadium development agenda for the 2022 World Cup and FIFA has endorsed the use of Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) to make sure that happens.
At the Green Expo Forum held in Doha on Monday, Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee Secretary General, Hassan Al Thawadi, stressed the importance of delivering a sustainable tournament as part of the country’s national development plan.
“Sustainable environmental development is one of the pillars to build a better future for the coming generations, as stated in the Qatar National Vision 2030. To achieve this, we must be sustainable beyond the borders of our plans, and turn them into a vision and daily behaviour that we aim to apply in all areas, in order to leave a lasting legacy for future generations,” he said.
GSAS is a performance-rating system developed for assessing green buildings and infrastructure. All 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar proposed host venues are designed with the aim of certification under GSAS.
FIFA, which is increasingly taking environmental and sustainable responsibilities more seriously, has endorsed the GASA system.
Federico Addiechi, FIFA’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, said: “We were able to review and approve that GSAS, as proposed to FIFA by the SC (Supreme Committee), fulfils our requirements for green certification of stadiums. This is remarkable because we were able to do that seven years before the actual tournament and this allows for adequate planning. Because, indeed, long-term planning is one of the most important factors in ensuring that a major sporting event is organised in a sustainable manner.”
