New season new look. Aussies rebrand A-League and bring W-League centerstage

January 26 – Australia’s Hyundai A-League is getting a new look that ties the Football Federation Australia (FFA) competition into a common branded identity with the Westfield W-League and Foxtel Y-League. The rebranding will be launched for the start of the 2017/18 season.

For the first time clubs will be able to adapt the league logo for use on merchandise and playing kits.

The Hyundai A-League brand will keep the colour orange, reflecting the inaugural brand created for the launch of the league in 2005. In addition, the Foxtel Y-League retains the brand colours of the Hyundai A-League as it acts as the feeder league for the competition. The “Westfield W-League has also been rebranded to align with the Hyundai A-League and better represent football in Australia,” said the FFA.

The FFA has just concluded a new A$350 million TV deal  with Fox Sports and the A-League is in the process of setting out criteria to expand from ten to 12 teams. More than 12 consortiums have reportedly expressed an interest in setting up expansion teams.

FFA chief executive David Gallop said: “Football has recently been confirmed as the number one club-based participation sport in Australia and we’ve just signed a new six year broadcast deal so it’s a great time to reveal a new brand for our leagues. The work we have done with Hulsbosch (the deign agency leading the rebranding) gives us a strong brand platform demonstrating the unity at the heart of Australian football.”

FFA logo rebrand

The A-League is seen as the driver of football expansion in Australia but the FFA does not want this to happen in isolation and said the design reinforces “the commitment to women’s football and better aligns and represents football’s maturity.”

Gallop reinforced this saying to local media: “This is the perfect time to update our look and use the same logo across the board, especially to reinforce football’s ongoing commitment to women’s football by connecting the A-League with the W-League.”
