February 13 – Manchester United’s famed Class of ’92 players that included Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are being linked with the opening of a new university in the Greater Manchester area.
Potentially linked with Lancaster University, locations are currently being sought in Trafford that would be a mix of existing and new build and would include halls of residence.
Although linked with Lancaster University, it appears the new university would take advantage of a bill going through parliament that will relax restrictions on private companies launching new universities.
One name suggested for the new venture, and in recognition of its backers, is University Academy ‘92, or UA92 for short.
Both Lancaster University and Gary Neville have confirmed that talks have been in progress. “I have been working on a feasibility study for some months on an exciting educational project but by no means is it ready to speak about in detail,” said Neville.
The University could have as many as 5,000 students and would specialise in sports studies as well as offering business and media degrees.
Manchester has increasingly become a sports media hub in the UK with the BBC have moved its sports output to Salford’s Media City. Competition in the region is strong for top students. Already with two universities in Manchester, nearby Liverpool University offers leading football business and media degrees and MBAs. Neville’s plan could cater for the next rung down of students looking to get into the sports business.
The Class of ’92 – which includes David Beckham – have co-operated in a number of business ventures though not all of the individuals commit to all of the projects. These have so far included a film documentary on their careers, the acquisition of Salford City Football Club and Hotel Football, opened near Old Trafford.
