February 28 – After a busy week that saw Manchester United qualify for the last 16 of the Europa League and then lift the EFL Cup at Wembley on Sunday, the club not surprisingly topped (yet again) the growth in new followers table. The club also topped the tweets table.
Topping the number of tweets table is an unusual occurrence for a club that has generally been mid-to-bottom of the table when it comes to tweeting. But a win is a win as Man Utd fans and the club’s Twitter feed reminded everyone, prompting one Saints to fan to comment that he hadn’t realised their fans were at Wembley until he heard them on the tube on the way back to their London homes.
The growth in new followers was 7,400 less than the previous week. That growth came with 245 tweets for the week. Man United tweeted 400 times in their tweet topping, trophy winning, Europe conquering week.
Chelsea have maintained their regular third place position in the growth chart, putting on 7,800 new followers more than Liverpool.
Liverpool’s 30,200 new followers were almost double the 16,000 of Manchester City who are rapidly losing distance on the top four clubs on Twitter.
Liverpool achieved their growth despite coming joint bottom of the tweet table with just 120 tweets – the same as Arsenal and Middlesbrough. Middlesbrough were bottom of the new followers table as well with just 1,300.
Bournemouth had the largest growth in followers this week with 0.72% with Burnley just behind with 0.68%.
