Double top for Manchester as City out-tweet United. Everton out-twitter Spurs

March 7 – It was not going to be a second week of double top for Manchester United but it was a double top for the city. United continued their long run leading the weekly Twitter growth in followers tables, but plummeted to 13th place in the most tweets for the week table with less than half the number of tweets of the previous EFL Cup winning week. Instead Man City took over the weekly lead in the tweets ranking.

A 1-1 draw with Bournemouth seems to have taken the gloss off Man Utd’s winning run. That was despite Bournemouth defender Tyler Mings feeling the elbow of Zlatan Ibrahmovic after stamping on his head – a double twitter event in the making. Local rivals Man City had no trouble taking over the top tweeters mantle.

Arsenal maintained their run in second place in the growth table with 52,700 new followers, 6,500 behind Man Utd. Chelsea are now back in a regular third spot but were 19,000 off Arsenal but 4,300 ahead of Liverpool.

While Spurs may have won their Premier League encounter against Everton at White Hart Lane,  Everton beat them with a gain in Twitter followers of 7,700 to take sixth place in the table – a position held almost exclusively by Spurs this season. That total is almost double that of West Ham in eighth place – perhaps marking a resurgence in fortune for the Toffees across the commercial, social media and football board?

Everton had the largest percentage growth this week with 0.74% as Romelu Lukaku became their highest Premier League goalscorer ever. Middlesborough were second with a growth of 0.68%.

Man City’s tweet topping 310 chirps were followed by resurgent Hull City with a tigerish 310.
