April 13 – Leicester City fans were involved in ugly clashes with Spanish police ahead of their Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid in the latest outbreak of violence involving English supporters.
Social media videos shot in the Plaza Major showed officers in body armour wielding batons prompting familiar claims by some fans that police over-reacted by using tear gas and rubber bullets.
Eight Leicester fans were reportedly arrested after footage posted online showed officers being targeted with flares and bottles amid chants of ‘You Spanish b……., Gibraltar is ours’.
BBC television presenter Gary Lineker, the former England and Leicester striker, tweeted: “Just saw the footage of some Leicester fans behaving despicably in Madrid. The few idiots ruin it for the decent majority. Sickening.”
